Laboratory for Advanced Transmission Electron Microscopy
Winter quarter, 3 units
Laboratory - one discussion session and one 3-hour laboratory session per week
Prerequisite: EMS-230L
Laboratory course in advanced electron microscopy techniques relevant to specific graduate student research projects in materials science.

Introduction
The objective of this course is to teach graduate students the transmission electron microscopy skills and techniques that they will need to complete their graduate research. It covers everything from methods of specimen preparation to basic and advanced imaging techniques to the analysis of the images. This class is project-driven. The students come to class with an analysis they would like to perform. During the quarter they receive instruction on the appropriate specimen preparation and TEM techniques. This class includes a visit and usually some work done at the National Center for Electron Microscopy in Berkeley.  Students are expected to obtain publishable results by the end of the quarter.
